MARCO

How long have you been shooting?
…mmm, started for fun back in Italy in the 70s with my dad’s Nikon Calypso (look it up, it’s quite a contraption). Professionally since 2001.

What is your favorite thing to shoot?
What people do for love.

Why are you different than other creative people?
I believe in the fragility of moments, life has a cinematographic side worth documenting, a wedding is a heck of a celebration to pull out and you need all the help you can get (hire a wedding planner), love makes people change, money is important every day of your life but not when you are having fun, families get together in big occasions and it deserves attention, there is a reason why you like somebody from the first moment you meet them, after everything is set and done all you have left are your photos.

What is your best/worse habit?
Best: There is an intensity in me even when I look calm. Worst: I’m superstitious to a fault.

My favorite quote is…
“It is the tension between a restless idealism on one hand and a sense of impending doom on the other that keeps me moving.” Hunter S. Thompson

CHUCK ARLUND

How long have you been shooting?
Since 1987.

What is your favorite thing to shoot?
Fashion!

Why are you different than other creative people?
I love this question and everybody should ask themselves this question. It’s not about what makes me different but what makes you different.

What is your best/worse habit?
N/A…

My favorite quote is…
“We are one weekend closer to death…”

THE STUDIO

Where is this studio located?
Our studio is located in a lovely loft right across the street from the Nelson Atkins Museum of art and few blocks away from the Plaza, downtown Kansas City. We made it into the perfect hang out place. Stark white and dark woods, a combination of classic and modern style furniture and by modern I mean classic 20es design… you see the tension between two poles is a common motif.

What’s the best feature of this place?
The light! There are large windows which makes it a pretty “photographic” place. On a different note though, the bar is always interestingly stocked and we enjoy mixing drinks for happy hour which is, not surprisingly, when most of our clients and friends prefer to come over for a visit.

Is this your first studio?
We opened our first studio 10 years ago in a 600 square feet retail space downtown Lees Summit. It was pretty tight, but we had equipment and lots of enthusiasm which is all you need when you are starting up. Oh the good old days! Since then we changed location to bigger space twice, still in the same area. We moved to downtown Kansas City almost 2 years ago.
